My favorite podcast, The Distraction, is coming to an end. Drew Magary and David Roth, id and superego, have spent over a decade together talking about sports but also life, and sandwiches and guys they remember and the deranged ways Tim Marchman cooks chicken.
It’s been hitting me hard this afternoon. Last year, when WTF ended, it was for sure a bummer but also I hadn’t been a regular listener for years, so the feeling was more remote. Drew and Roth are my podcast pals. They’ve been cheering up my Thursday mornings since back when I had to commute to work, and while there are other podcasts I like, the bonhomie of this one isn’t something I feel with any of them.
Roth once called the podcast “a show about aging,” which in the moment was a good throwaway joke but was also kind of a thesis statement. I’m a lot different now, at 39, than I was as a new dad in my twenties when I started listening to the show. The hosts are different, too: they went from being employees at Gawker Media (which sounds like it was basically fine) to being employees of private equity (not fine, and an experience I’ve shared), to being the owners of their workplace, Drew’s in recovery, and they’ve shared so many of the big and small moments that make up what your life is along the way. It may have been naïve or even selfish of me but I always figured I’d go on aging along with them.
I know it’s not the end of the world. Drew’s about to start a new weekly podcast (during the football season, at least) and apparently Roth is working on something as well. But the hangouts are almost over, and I’ll miss them.
